Aluminium Trim: The Spec-Grade Profile. Holds Finish. Takes Impact.
A commercial fit-out spec usually says one thing about trim: aluminium. Not PVC. Not plastic. Aluminium. The reason is simple. Hotel corridors get luggage carts. Office lobbies get cleaners with buffer machines. Hospital hallways get bed frames scraping the walls. PVC trim in those conditions fails inside two years. Aluminium trim is still there at year ten.
The aluminium trim profile is cut to length, then goes to surface treatment. Anodising - electrochemical oxidation that bonds to the metal. Powder coating - electrostatic spray then oven-cured. Both finishes are harder than the base metal. Scratch resistance. UV stable. No yellowing. No peeling.
Compatible panel thickness: 3mm to 18mm. That covers thin acrylic sheets, standard 8-10mm PVC bathroom panels, and thick composite cladding at 15-18mm. One trim range. Any panel spec.

Aluminium Internal Corner Trim
Where two panels meet inside a room. The aluminium internal corner slides behind both panel edges. The visible face is 3mm wide - a clean metallic line that architects use as a design detail. Anodised silver matches stainless steel fixtures. Black powder coat disappears into dark wall panels. Champagne gold works with brass bathroom fittings.
Standard length 300cm. One piece per wall height. No intermediate join.
Aluminium External Corner Trim
The most abused aluminium trim on any job. External corners catch everything. Furniture. Trolleys. Shoulders. A bare panel edge at an external corner will chip within a month of occupancy. Paint will not save it. Edge banding peels.
The aluminium trim wraps the angle in 1.5-2.0mm wall thickness aluminium. It takes the hit, not the panel. If the corner gets dented - which takes serious force - you replace a 3-metre trim strip, not a 3-metre panel. Ten minute fix versus a half-day redo.
We have supplied a London hotel where the spec originally called for PVC external corners. The GC changed spec after the first floor was installed because the mock-up room showed impact damage within two weeks of contractor traffic during fit-out. Aluminium went in from floor two onward. No replacements since.
Aluminium End Cap / U-Channel
Exposed edges. Window reveals. Door reveals. The top of a half-height panel. The visible face is a clean aluminium trim edge 3-5mm wide. The channel grips the panel on both sides. Fixed with low-modulus neutral-cure silicone or mechanical clips; the adhesive is a site sundry and is not part of our trim supply. No mechanical clips needed on standard installs.
Design use: black anodised end cap on a white marble-look panel. The contrast draws a clean line. Designers specify it for feature walls in retail and hospitality because the shadow gap is sharper than any PVC equivalent.
Aluminium H Joint
Connecting two panels side by side or top to bottom. The centre bar is a 3mm aluminium trim web. It absorbs thermal expansion movement - 1-2mm over a 3-metre panel span. Silicone butt joints crack within a season. The aluminium H joint does not.
In horizontal panel installations where the wall is 6 metres wide and panels are 3 metres, you need one H joint per row. The line becomes part of the design grid. Specify the same colour as the panels or contrast it.
Aluminium L Angle
Ceiling and floor perimeter. The aluminium trim covers the gap between the panel edge and the ceiling line or skirting. Structural on suspended ceiling installations where the top of the panel cannot be mechanically fixed. The aluminium leg holds the panel edge in place.
Standard 300cm length. Surface finish matched to the other trims on the job. Consistency matters - a gold external corner with a silver L angle on the same wall looks like a mistake.

Surface Finishes: Anodised vs Powder Coated
Anodised. The aluminium trim sits in an acid bath with electric current. Oxygen bonds to the surface, creating a ceramic-hard aluminium oxide layer. Thickness: 10-25 microns. The finish is integral to the metal - it cannot peel because it is the metal. Natural anodised is silver-grey. Black anodised uses dye absorbed into the oxide pores before sealing. Most architectural spec calls for anodised because it does not chip. A scratch on anodised aluminium is still aluminium colour underneath.
Powder coated. Dry polyester powder sprayed electrostatically onto the aluminium trim, then baked at 180-200°C. The powder melts and cures into a continuous film. Thickness: 60-80 microns. RAL colour matching - any colour in the RAL system is available. Powder coat can chip under hard impact. That is the trade-off for colour flexibility.
Which one for your job? Anodised for high-traffic commercial - hotels, hospitals, schools. Powder coated when you need a specific brand colour or the architect has specified a RAL code. Both finishes carry a 10-year warranty against peeling and colour fade under normal interior conditions.

What is the minimum order quantity for aluminium trim? +
300 pcs per colour, the same as our PVC trim. Mixed profiles are accepted within the total order, so internal corners, external corners and H joints can be combined in one production run.
What are the lead times? +
15-25 days for standard profiles. 25-35 days for custom colour or custom profiles. Sea freight from Ningbo or Shanghai adds 25-45 days to EU, UK and US ports, on EXW, FOB or CIF terms.
Should I specify anodised or powder coated aluminium trim? +
Anodised for high-traffic commercial interiors - hotels, hospitals, schools - because the finish is part of the metal and does not chip. Powder coated when the architect has specified a RAL code or the trim has to match a brand colour. Both are interior finishes.
Can you match a RAL or a custom colour? +
Powder coat matches any colour in the RAL system. For anodised, send a physical sample and we match against it - anodised tone is set by dye absorption, so the match is confirmed at sample stage before the production run.
What panel thickness does aluminium trim fit? +
3mm to 18mm. That covers thin acrylic sheets, standard 8-10mm PVC bathroom panels and composite cladding at 15-18mm. Outside that range we produce a custom channel to your panel spec.
