Why waterproof PVC panels beat ceramic tile in wet zones
PVC panel repels water on a seamless plane; ceramic grout absorbs 3-8% water and needs re-grouting every 3-5 years.
Every leak in a tiled shower starts in the same place: a grout line. Cement-based grout is porous by design - it absorbs water at 3 to 8 percent by weight, which is why bathroom tiles need re-grouting every 3 to 5 years even under normal residential use. In commercial applications (hotel guest bathrooms, social housing, gym change-rooms), grout failure moves from cosmetic problem to warranty claim.
Waterproof PVC bathroom panels solve this by removing the grout line entirely. Panels lock together with a machined tongue-and-groove joint, sealed at trims with sanitary-grade silicone. Our virgin-PVC hollow-core sheet batch-tests at 0.02-0.04 percent water absorption over a 24-hour submerged test against the EN 13245-2 (Section 5.4) 0.5 percent limit - roughly 60 times less porous than the cement grout it replaces.

Surface finish is applied via oiling, thermal lamination or Cold HD Transprint technology, sealed with a UV-cured 2H+ protective topcoat. Custom-print colour matching: ΔE ≤ 1.5 versus your Pantone reference. Custom-print minimum: 1000 sqm per finish, tooling amortised over 3 orders.
Installation over existing tile or drywall
Full over-tile installation: 90-120 minutes per 4 sqm cubicle, no strip-out needed.
Full crew install time for a standard 4 sqm shower cubicle: 90-120 minutes for two fitters. No tile-cutter, no grout float, no wet saw needed.
Step 1 - Prep the substrate
Wall must be dry, flat within plus-minus 3 mm across 2 m, and free of dust or loose paint. Existing ceramic tiles can stay in place - degrease with sugar soap, key the surface with 80-grit sandpaper, then wipe clean. Do not remove old tiles just for a panel over-fit; the panel handles the level difference.
Step 2 - Measure and cut
Panels cut with a utility knife (score-and-snap) or a fine-tooth jigsaw blade. Always cut with the decorative face up. Allow a 3-5 mm expansion gap at floor and ceiling - the trim covers it. For pipe cut-outs, use a hole-saw one size larger than the pipe diameter.
Step 3 - Apply adhesive
Use solvent-free hybrid polymer adhesive (MS polymer, e.g. Sika-Bond T-2 or equivalent). Apply a 6 mm zigzag bead around the panel perimeter and three vertical beads down the middle. Coverage: one 290 ml cartridge per 2.4 sqm. Do not use silicone as a bonding adhesive - it will not hold the panel long-term.
Step 4 - Lock the joint
Start from a corner. Set the first panel plumb, groove-side facing the wall corner. Press the next panel's tongue into the groove of the fixed panel at a 20-degree angle, then rotate flat. A tight fit needs a firm hand-push - do not hammer.
Step 5 - Finish with trim
Use matching PVC trim: internal corner, external corner, end cap / edge, H-joint for vertical butt-joints. Seal trim-to-panel and trim-to-substrate junctions with sanitary-grade neutral-cure silicone. Do not silicone the tongue-and-groove joints themselves - the mechanical lock is the waterproofing.

Are PVC waterproof bathroom panels really 100 percent waterproof? +
The panel face and core are functionally waterproof: 0.02-0.04 percent water absorption on a 24-hour submerged test (EN 13245-2 Section 5.4 specification: max 0.5 percent). System waterproofing depends on three things: the panel itself, the mechanical tongue-and-groove joint between panels, and sanitary silicone at trim junctions. In four years of commercial UK installations (social housing, hotels) we have logged zero warranty claims for water ingress. Sealant refresh at trims is recommended at year 8-10.
What is the water absorption test result and how is it measured? +
We test to EN 13245-2 (Section 5.4) - a 24-hour submerged water absorption test where a 50 mm x 50 mm sample is weighed dry, submerged in 20 °C distilled water for 24 hours, then reweighed. Our July 2026 production batch measured 0.02 to 0.04 percent weight gain across 500 samples. For context: ceramic grout absorbs 3-8 percent water, PU foam absorbs 30+ percent, and untreated MDF absorbs 40+ percent. The panel is essentially non-porous at practical bathroom exposure levels.
Can waterproof PVC panels be installed directly over existing ceramic tile? +
Yes, and this is one of the main reasons trade fitters specify our panels for hotel refurbishments - the crew avoids the labour cost, dust and skip-hire fees of a full tile-out. The substrate must be sound (no drummy tiles), degreased with sugar soap and lightly abraded with 80-grit. Adhesive coverage stays at one 290 ml cartridge per 2.4 sqm. Panels finish approximately 12-14 mm proud of the original tile face, which usually falls inside the shower tray upstand.
How do the panels perform under thermal shock (hot shower to cold room)? +
Our internal thermal cycling test runs the panels through 500 cycles from 5 °C to 60 °C, which simulates approximately 5 years of daily hot-shower use in a UK climate. The panels show no delamination, no visible cracking at joints, and less than 0.4 mm dimensional change across the 2400 mm panel length. The hollow core absorbs thermal expansion by design.
What warranty do you offer for commercial installations? +
15 years on the core structural performance (water absorption, delamination, joint integrity). 5 years on decorative film UV colour-fastness. Warranty is transferable to the end client and covers factory replacement of defective panels - labour and reinstallation are not included, which is standard practice in the trade. Warranty is void if panels are installed with non-recommended adhesives (contact / silicone as bond), or in submerged applications (swimming pools, sauna wet zones).
Do you supply matching trim, silicone and adhesive? +
Yes. All trim profiles (internal corner, external corner, end cap, H-joint) are extruded from the same PVC formulation and colour-matched to the panel finish. Trim is billed separately per linear metre (a typical 4 sqm cubicle needs about 10 lm). We can source sanitary-grade silicone and MS polymer adhesive from our qualified suppliers and add to the container - useful for buyers who want a full one-container solution for a project.
What is the container capacity and lead time for a mixed-finish order? +
A 40ft high-cube container carries 4,800-5,400 sqm depending on finish mix; mirror-gloss finishes need extra corner-protection foam and load slightly less. Lead time for a mixed-finish order of 3,000-5,000 sqm across up to 6 colours is 22-28 days ex-Ningbo. We ship one loading-video and packed-count photo set before B/L release, and we can add sanitary-grade silicone and MS polymer adhesive to the same container.
