What is a tongue-and-groove shower wall panel?
A tongue-and-groove PVC shower wall panel is a full-height waterproof cladding sheet with a machined interlocking edge profile. The "tongue" on one panel locks into the "groove" on the adjacent panel, creating a zero-gap, grout-free seam. No silicone between joints. No water path to the substrate behind the panel.

Eastopo manufactures these panels at 1000 mm wide and 10 mm thick with a hollow core PVC core. The wide format means a standard 2-metre-wide shower cubicle uses just two panels - and one single mechanical joint - instead of eight panels and seven grout-dependent seams with standard 250 mm bathroom cladding.
The tongue-and-groove joint is machined to a 0.2 mm tolerance on our CNC routing line. Every panel is dry-fitted and inspected at the factory before packing. The joint is the waterproofing. No adhesive, no tape, no secondary seal - the geometry does the work.
Why the joint matters - 75% fewer leak points
The most common failure mode in a PVC shower surround is not the panel itself - it is the joint. Standard 250 mm PVC panels leave 7 vertical seams in a 2-metre-wide cubicle. Every seam is a potential water path. Every seam relies on silicone, which degrades with temperature cycling and bathroom cleaning chemicals. Cement-based grout absorbs 3–8% water by weight and needs re-grouting every 3–5 years. A 1000 mm T&G panel reduces seam count from 7 to 1 - a 75% reduction in leak points.
Here is what happens when a standard narrow panel joint fails: water penetrates the silicone bead, saturates the substrate (plasterboard or MDF), and the wall behind the panel swells. The panel delaminates from the adhesive. The installer is called back. The hotel room or rental unit is out of service. For a specifier looking at 20–50 bathrooms in a project brief, a failed joint is not a cosmetic problem - it is a structural failure that costs a day of downtime and a full panel replacement.
The T&G joint eliminates this failure mode by making the joint mechanically waterproof. Even if the installer skips silicone entirely (which they should not - silicone is still required at panel-to-tray and trim junctions), the T&G seam itself does not leak because water cannot travel upward through a 0.2 mm interference-fit channel against gravity.

Rejected batch rate: For the June–July 2026 sample period, 3 batches out of 47 were rejected (6.4%) - two flagged for UV colour drift on custom digital-print finishes, one for edge-line delamination on a mirror-gloss run. Dimensional tolerance on width and thickness is held to ±0.2 mm across all production lines.

Installation - 90 minutes for a standard shower cubicle
A two-person crew can fit a 4 sqm T&G shower cubicle in 90–120 minutes. No wet saw. No grout float. No drying time. No tile-cutter. This is the workflow that makes T&G panels the preferred spec for hotel chains and housing associations where room turnaround time directly affects operating cost.
Step 1 - Prepare the substrate
Wall must be dry, flat within ±3 mm across 2 m, and free of dust or loose paint. Existing ceramic tiles can remain in place - degrease with sugar soap, key with 80-grit sandpaper, wipe clean. Do not remove old tiles just for a panel over-fit; the panel handles the level difference. The 10 mm panel plus adhesive adds approximately 12–14 mm to the wall face, which typically falls inside the shower tray upstand.
Step 2 - Measure and cut
Cut panels with a utility knife (score-and-snap method) or a fine-tooth jigsaw. Always cut decorative face up. Leave a 3–5 mm expansion gap at floor and ceiling - trim profiles cover it. For pipe penetrations, use a hole-saw one size larger than the pipe OD.
Step 3 - Apply adhesive
Use solvent-free hybrid polymer (MS polymer) adhesive (e.g. Sika-Bond T-2 or equivalent). Apply a 6 mm zigzag bead around the panel perimeter plus three vertical beads down the centre. Coverage: one 290 ml cartridge per 2.4 sqm. Do not use standard silicone as a bonding adhesive - it lacks the structural hold for a 10 mm panel.
Step 4 - Lock the T&G joint
Start from a corner. Set the first panel plumb, groove side facing the wall corner. Insert the next panel's tongue into the groove of the fixed panel at a 20-degree angle, then rotate the panel flat against the wall. The interference fit requires a firm hand-push - the panel clicks into place. Do not hammer. Do not fill the joint with adhesive or silicone - the mechanical lock is the waterproof seal.
Step 5 - Finish with trim and perimeter silicone
Fit matching PVC trim profiles: internal corner, external corner, end cap / U-channel, H-joint for vertical butt-joints, L angle for the ceiling and floor lines, and quadrant where a radius is preferred over a square internal corner. Seal trim-to-panel and trim-to-tray junctions with sanitary-grade neutral-cure silicone. The only silicone on a T&G installation is at the perimeter - never between panel-to-panel joints.

Do T&G joints really not need silicone between panels? +
Correct. The tongue-and-groove joint is a mechanical waterproof seal. The 0.2 mm interference fit, combined with the panel's 10 mm thickness, prevents water from travelling up through the joint. Silicone is still required at the panel-to-shower-tray junction, internal corner trims, and around pipe penetrations - but never between panel-to-panel joints. Filling the T&G joint with silicone actually weakens the mechanical lock by preventing full insertion of the tongue into the groove.
How do the panels perform under thermal shock - hot shower to cold bathroom? +
Our internal thermal cycling test runs panels through 500 cycles from 5°C to 60°C, which simulates approximately 5 years of daily hot-shower use in a UK climate. The panels show no delamination, no visible cracking at joints, and less than 0.4 mm dimensional change across the full 2400 mm panel length. The hollow core absorbs thermal expansion by design - the core structure flexes internally rather than transferring stress to the joint or adhesive bond.
What is the water absorption test result and how is it measured? +
We test to EN 13245-2 (Section 5.4), a 24-hour submerged water absorption test: a 50 mm × 50 mm sample is weighed dry, submerged in 20 ° C distilled water for 24 hours, then reweighed. Our July 2026 production batch measured 0.02–0.04% weight gain across 500 samples. For context: ceramic grout absorbs 3–8%, PU foam 30+%, untreated MDF 40+%. The panel is roughly 60 times less porous than the cement grout it replaces.
Can T&G panels be installed directly over existing ceramic tile? +
Yes, and this is one of the main reasons trade fitters specify our panels for hotel refurbishments. The crew avoids the labour cost, dust and skip-hire fees of a full tile-out. The substrate must be sound (no drummy tiles), degreased with sugar soap and lightly abraded with 80-grit sandpaper. Adhesive coverage stays at one 290 ml cartridge per 2.4 sqm. Panels finish approximately 12–14 mm proud of the original tile face, which usually falls inside the shower tray upstand.
Can these panels be cut on site with standard tools? +
Yes. The score-and-snap method with a sharp utility knife is sufficient for straight cuts. For L-cuts around windows or pipe boxes, a fine-tooth jigsaw with a downward-cutting blade gives a clean edge. No specialist tile-cutting equipment is required - a standard fitter's toolkit handles the entire installation.
Do you supply matching trim, silicone and adhesive for a complete job? +
Yes. All six trim profiles (internal corner, external corner, end cap / U-channel, H-joint, L angle, quadrant) are extruded from the same PVC formulation and colour-matched to the panel finish. Trim is billed separately per linear metre; a typical 4 sqm cubicle needs approximately 10 linear metres. We can source sanitary-grade neutral-cure silicone and MS polymer adhesive from our qualified suppliers and add them to the container, giving trade buyers a full one-container solution.
How do T&G PVC panels compare to wood-fibre WPC fluted panels for shower areas? +
T&G PVC panels use 100% virgin PVC with a hollow core - fully waterproof, lighter, and more cost-effective than wood-fibre WPC (wood-plastic composite) alternatives. Wood fibre in those panels absorbs moisture at cut edges unless factory-sealed. For wet areas like shower cubicles and steam rooms, 100% PVC T&G panels are the correct material choice. Wood-fibre WPC is better suited to dry interior feature walls where its additional rigidity and wood-like density justify the higher material cost.
Are Eastopo T&G panels compliant with UK Building Regulations? +
Yes. Our panels carry CE EN 13245-2 for interior wall and ceiling finishes and EN 13501-1 Class B-s2, d0 for reaction to fire.
